On the Run!

Running with the iPhone

Another update on applications for runners for the iPhone:

  • The Running GyPSy tracks running distance and pace.
  • Distance Meter does the same, shows coordinates and altitude, and has a stopwatch. Both apps do not integrate with Google (or other) maps.
  • iTrail shows tempo and distance, coordinates and altitude. It records the trail you follow, and then plots it on a map. iTrail lets you export GPS data to Google Docs, and then to Google Earth and Google maps.
  • PaceCalc gives you a simple way to calculate time, distance, and pace for your workouts or race.
  • Pacemaker is a simple – yet very usful – application to compute your run time for a range of standard medium to long distance runs based on a shorter distance. It’s free.
  • Path Tracker is an iPhone and iPod Touch application that displays your path on a map as you move. It also shows elapsed time, speed, latitude, longitude, and altitude. After tracking you upload the track from the iPhone to the website. From there you may export it as a gpx-file.
  • Track’n Trail alows the creation of multiple tracks and adding waypoints. Measurement units also include nautical miles. There is GPX-File support. Current position as well as tracks can be sent via email. Track’n Trail is compatible with Google Earth and Openstreetmap.org.
  • RunKeeper, already mentioned in an earlier post, enables iPhone users to track distance an speed and to map the tracks on Google maps. There is a YouTube video demonstrating the app here

All the apps are available for download in the Apple app store (via iTunes).

Running and the iPhone?

The new 3G iPhone includes GPS. This makes it super interesting for runners, of course, as there is also an mp3-player to play e.g. a workout playlist.

So far (two weeks after launch), there are no iPhone applications for runners. However, there is RunKeeper in the pipeline which will enable iPhone users to track distance an speed and to map the tracks on Google maps. There is a YouTube video demonstrating the app here. Sounds interesting!

Path Tracker is another iPhone application waiting to be included iPhone App Store that displays your path on a map as you move, the distance you’ve traveled, average speed, coordinates, and altitude.

The next Apple update of the iPhone firmware will likely improve navigating with turn-by-turn GPS. So there is a lot more to come.

Another interesting application for the iPhone is WordPress. WordPress is the stuff enabling blogs as the one you are just reading. They created a WordPress for iPhone application for mobile blogging. Cool! Blogging while running -with some nice photos perhaps?! For some runner photos see my website.

I like my Garmin Forerunner 305 a lot! Not only does it give me feedback on distance and tempo. It also allows to create individual trainings. For example, I have an intervall training with 17×300m@04:31/km and 200m recovery jogs in between. The device leads me through this training and tells me when to pick up tempo and so on…

For all fans of GPS and tracking software, there is a very nice training log app. Ascent allows the synchronisation of training computers like Garmin’s Forerunner 305 with graphical display of tracks and runs. The app is also compatible with Google Earth.
